Emma Mackay, Apprentice, SSE

What do you do and where do you do it?

I am in the second year of my Modern Apprenticeship as an electrician at Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE).

What do you like about your role?

I like how I’m working with people who are happy to share their skills and experience, it’s a great team to be a part of. I am constantly learning and adapting to new skills. I am currently working on a SSE refurbishment near Pitlochry, Scotland, one of the many sites and properties I have had a chance to work on.

How did you decide you wanted to become an apprentice?

While I was at high school I took part in one of SSE’s 10-week employability programmes. It was such a great experience, it gave me an insight into this career I would never had thought to go into. So when I was offered a Modern Apprenticeship as an electrician, I couldn’t refuse!

"I feel respected in my role and I think that’s a really important aspect to any job."

Did you ever consider going to university?

I chose to do an apprenticeship rather than going to university because I knew university wasn’t the route for me. I am now able to still learn, but work and earn at the same time through my apprenticeship.

Do you think you made the right decision?

It meant I had to (sadly) move away from home, but it has definitely been worth it. I am learning so much and doing something different every day – I know I made the right decision. I feel respected in my role and I think that’s a really important aspect to any job.
