Wayne Fearn, Training Advisor, South West Water

What do you do and where do you do it?

I am a Training Advisor at Company Training Centre in Hatherleigh. I also travel to various South West Water sites to deliver training courses and if required I deliver training for commercial clients at their premises.

Why is your role important?

The various courses I deliver all focus around Health and Safety. It’s my job to ensure that our workforce are trained correctly as this will enable them to stay safe whilst at work. Injuries/accidents at work can have an enormous impact on the person injured and their families. This can lead to time off work, compensation claims, prosecution and puts extra burden on the NHS.

Which parts of the job do you enjoy most?

I think of myself as very lucky, although I deliver the same courses each month, my audience changes every time. So there is always a different group of characters in the room. I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience as I know that ultimately it will keep them safe.

What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?

I have been actively involved with Health and Safety for many years. As a union Health and Safety Representative I completed many courses to enable me to fulfill my duties.

Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?

I would recommend my job to a friend. However, I have no wish to leave this role so they would have to look elsewhere. This role is my first within the water utility sector and I find it absolutely fascinating. There are so many diverse roles throughout the business. I enjoy my training role as everyday is different.
