Tom's Story – Maintenance Performance Manager, Thames Water
Tom was a Captain in the Royal Logistics Corps for 7 years, having served with 23 Pioneer Regiment, 4 Regiment and 27 Regiment. He was a specialist Petroleum Officer and served in various locations throughout his time. Thames Water was a ‘good fit’ for Tom and his skillset when he left the army.
What do you do and where do you do it?
I manage the maintenance team at Mogden STW, which consists of mechanical fitters, electricians, welders and instrument and control analysts; 14 in total.
What does an average day consist of?
My daily job description is the management of any reactive breakdowns on site to keep the operational output as high as possible (easier said than done!). I also attempt to plan long term work in whenever possible whilst doing various other jobs around site. As with all operations, things never end, and every day brings new challenges.
Why is your role important?
My work makes sure that all the dangerous components and the components that don’t burn very well are safely removed from the natural gas that is eventually used in people’s boilers, people’s cookers, to generate electricity etc. The work I do is important to almost all aspects of daily life, like keeping us warm during the winter, keeping the lights on, and cooking food!
What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?
I attended a Thames Water insight day at Coppermills WTW where my interest grew. They seemed to really care about bringing ex-military personnel across, which appealed to me. The extra benefits (pension, leave and financial incentives) really interested me and the work/life balance came across incredibly positively. All in all, Thames Water seemed like a great company to work for.
Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?
My experience working for Thames Water has been brilliant because it is exactly what I had hoped for. A lovely environment to work in and a job that I actually enjoy turning up for again! Thames Water genuinely seem to care about me which is a nice feeling to have and every day is different. The opportunity for long term growth is possible and my prospects for the future look bright once more. If anyone asks me if they should join Thames Water, my answer is always yes!
