Eleanor spent the first 9 months at Lincoln EFW in the maintenance department. As well as being integrated in the current team, she had the benefit of working with a previous graduate who was awarded a permanent position in Edinburgh and who has subsequently been promoted into a position at Lincoln.

My days vary tremendously. I could be in the office trending data, looking through O&M manuals, researching for projects and liaising with contractors. Or I could be on plant doing water tests, supervising contractors or undertaking maintenance work.

When I started at Lincoln, it was straight into the outage. I was going in the boiler and economisers, fitting vibrating table motors and fixing a steam ejector. Following the outage, I was working on various projects, however the main one was looking into changes to the Best Available Techniques Reference (BREF) document. This involved calculating the quantity of extra consumables we would need to meet the new emissions limits for all the sites.

I am now working on the water chemistry project. I make sure that our water and steam are to the right quality, ensuring they don’t damage pipework or the turbine. I have been working to optimise the process and our chemical dosing, updating documents and procedures, training operators, conducting water tests and managing improvements projects.

I was originally meant to go to another FCC site for the second half of my placement, but my managers and I wanted me to continue the water chemistry project at Lincoln.
