Ryeannie's Story - Apprentice - Customer Services, British Gas

Ryeannie Scullion made a big decision when changing her career plans. Since starting her apprenticeship at British Gas, she has been introduced to a whole host of new career paths. Find out why she doesn't regret her decision.

What do you do?

I am a customer service advisor at British Gas.

What did you do before?

While I was at school I volunteered at a school for children with disabilities. My plans were to go to university to become a physiotherapist – but the more I thought about it, the more I realised university wasn’t really for me.

How did you go from making that decision to becoming an apprentice at British Gas?

I applied for the apprenticeship because I think it's exciting to be part of something new and different to what I had initially planned. 

Are you enjoying your apprenticeship?

Even though I had no idea what I was going into when I began my apprenticeship, it’s definitely one of the best things I’ve done. I’m still studying but also earning money – I feel like I have a career.

So you’re pleasantly surprised?

Yes! Everyone on the scheme is fortunate to have training – a good mix of learning, listening to agents take customer calls and have classroom learning too. I’m young and have worked hard to get where I am, and hope to continue building my career.  

Do you feel like you made the right choice?

I have made the right choice as I really am a people person, learning about helping customers every day and their responses is really what this job is about. It makes you feel good about yourself knowing you’re helping others.
