Tommy works as a Mechanical Technician at Bacton Gas Terminal where a network of underground pipework and above ground installations connects the UK to Europe for imports and exports of gas supplies.

Why is your role important? Why is it important to the company/ the people of the UK/ the UK economy?

The UK and Europe depends on us for gas supplies, we have a gas network of underground pipework and above ground installations across the UK. Bacton Gas terminal also connects to Europe for imports and exports of gas supplies

Which parts of the job do you enjoy most / find most rewarding?

I enjoy all aspects of my job but if I had to choose then it would be when we are overhauling and repairing equipment. Example: fire pump engines/Pumps, Valves.

What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?

Ive always had a passion for anything mechanical, as young as the age of 12 I was rebuilding engines. I Started my career in the motor trade and qualified for NVQ Level 2 in motor mechanic at a back street garage. Moved on to a Nissan dealership where I obtained Level 3 NVQ in motor mechanics and my MOT licence. I then moved on to a Volkswagen dealership where I specialised in different areas on vehicles with specialist training from Volkswagen. Example, Petrol and diesel engine management, occupant safety, manual and auto gearboxes. I was working towards master technician at the point of leaving the motor trade and entering the oil and gas industry.

I got to a point where I wanted new challenges and was given an opportunity to work in the oil and gas industry and haven’t looked back as its more interesting and rewarding.

To be in this industry you are required complete several training courses to be compliant with HSE legislation. I’m currently competent in gas isolations, Gas testing, all types of mechanical maintenance and overhauls.

What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?

Money and new challenges. Moving from the motor trade almost at the top. To the bottom in oil and gas gave me a 20K increase in yearly wage.

Training and progression is endless.

Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?

There is more variety of work and less pressure form customers

What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?

Career prospects are endless, you are encouraged to keep climbing. I’m continuously training and developing.

What does an average day consist of?

Always staying safe. Routine Maintenance, ordering spares, problem solving, ensuring we are HSE compliant, Helping others and training Apprentices.

Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?

Yes as it’s a heathy and enjoyable work environment. The job is very rewarding, I feel valued as a person and not just a number.
