Jeremie's STORY
Telemetry & Controls Engineer, National Gas
Telemetry & Controls Engineer
National Gas
Jeremie wanted to be in a role where I could help people and influence the future.
What do you do and where do you do it?
I am a Telemetry & Controls Engineer. I predominantly work from home but often I travel to different parts of the UK to visit sites and meet Designers and Suppliers.
Why is your role important? Why is it important to the company/ the people of the UK/ the UK economy?
Without Telemetry, we would not know what state the gas in our pipelines is, control where the gas is going or inform us of any issues on the pipelines. Thus, role is important as my responsibilities include designing new Telemetry systems on top of supporting the operation, maintenance and repair of current systems.
Which parts of the job do you enjoy most / find most rewarding?
I enjoy every part of my job, even when it does seem like everything is going against me at times!
The feeling of supporting our Operations colleagues with fixing faults or seeing through a Project from start to finish is very rewarding.
What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?
Like many, I went through GCSEs and A-Levels. I then did a BEng at the University of Sunderland before joining the Graduate Programme with National Grid at the time about a year after graduating.
What did you do before?
Before this Telemetry role, I was a Control & Instrumentation Engineer with National Gas too, as it was the role I took when I completed the Graduation Programme.
What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?
I wanted to be in a role where I could help people and influence the future.
Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?
Now I am more hands-on with regards to the systems we design and work with so now I feel more control with regards to decisions and influencing our designers. It is very satisfying to see what we have designed, get implemented.
What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?
Very good! I have received lots of training since I joined which has allowed me to explore different subject areas such as Cyber Security, SCADA applications and Telemetry systems. Development wise, I am seeking Incorporated Engineer (IEng) statues with the IET which is being support by the business.
What does an average day consist of?
It depends. At home my average day consists of checking emails (surprise!), drafting and reviewing design documentation such as Input-Output schedules and providing support to Projects and Operations colleagues remotely. When I’m on site, the day varies a lot more but usually consists of carrying out testing and overseeing Projects.
Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?
I would definitely recommend my job to my friend! The work is varied and challenging, I get to travel to different parts of the UK – with some truly awesome views! And there is a real sense of making a difference in a sector that is constantly evolving.
